Project 1: Self-Expression through Object ‘REPRESENTING ME’

The purpose of the project is for students to unravel their creative side and inner self through various mode of communication or art form. Student as designers will generate ideas from self-identity through personal interests, preferences, attitude and personality. These ideas and qualities will later on applied to any three dimensional form (as an artwork or sculpture, upcycling products, mask & other means). Representation of self must only be interpreted in abstract form where in it requires rigorous design thinking and highest form of creatively representing yourself.

Through this project, I am able to produce objects to communicate ideas and also explore one form of generating design concept or idea. Lastly, I am able to construct a representational piece of art based on initial ideas that have been abstracted through the process of translation and interpretation.

Project 2 LIFE CAPSULE

We are required to design a space which is maximum 12 cu. m for 24 hours use for single occupancy, which is call ‘Life Capsule’. The aim of this project is to heighten the awareness of students about the human body, interaction of space and body, and explore the role of reasoning and logic in shaping the form.

We are asked to suspend any preconceived notions of familiar objects. A re-conceptualization of items found in a room. There were 5 members in my group which are Kenneth Chang, Muhammad Ikmal, Muhammad Azzam and Muhammad Nabeel. We have decided to design a space for a Chef where enables him/her to spend 24 hours in the space. We have developed several ideas before deciding on our final design.

I would say this project is quite challenging for us as the space is limited and we have to fulfill the requirements for 24 hours use. Overall, I am able to explore objective parameters of design process through solving real-life architectural problems and able to distinguish and discern the role of scale and proportion in the relationship between the human body and a designed space or enclosure.  I also get to understand the human factors to the design of space such as its size, shape, and how appropriate it is for the task. Through this project, I learnt to improve comfort, safety, and productivity of a particular space. I am able to explore the relation of form and function too.

Project 3: Dreamscape for the Self ‘HIDE OUT’ (Part A)

In this project, we are required to design a hideout space by ‘grafting’ or engaging it to the walls of this virtual city on an empty abandoned plot. Our design is inspired by our personal understanding and perception of a hideout that best fits our individual virtual character created in the movie.

We were divided into groups of 5. My group consist of Kenneth, Nabeel, Azzam, Ikmal and myself. Each group chooses a movie and work with the virtual city of that movie. For me, our group chose the movie Batman, The Dark Knight. We look into selected films as inspirations not only for character and thematic development, but also to derive the nature of the site and imagined cityscape.

After deciding on the location of the site, we built out the actual site model out on a scale of 1:50.

Project 3: Dreamscape for the Self ‘HIDE OUT’ (Part B)

We are required to apply all our understandings from Project 1, Project 2 and Project 3 (Part A) to design a space for our client in a given site. The design will start with a narrative –depicting expressive quality of the site, characteristics of our dream client, activities supposed to happen in our designed space etc. - and develop through sketches and study models to give a physical shape to our narrative and ideas. I have chosen David Beckham as my client.

Through this project, I am able to identify, articulate and apply basic design principles in spatial organization and relationships. Before deciding on my final design, I have done a lot of research an also made a few sketch models. By doing this, I am able to produce and choose wisely among variety type of models with the aim of generating and developing design as well as better presentation of idea. I can also advance my communication skills through sketching internal expression of space, diagrams and variety type of models.
